Therapeutic Benefits
COBRA is our high/low mobility base and allows for the easy attachment of the BINGO Evolution seat unit or any other orthopedic seating system or seat shell. This enables users to continue enjoying the benefits of a comfortable and optimally adjusted seat unit in the home environment.
COBRA is also equipped with casters, making it easy to move around the room. Furthermore, the height can be adjusted quickly and easily using two individually adjustable gas springs. First and foremost, this allows for a low seat height setting, enabling access to the environment and, for example, participation in play activities on the floor with peers. This interaction with other children or people is extremely important for a child’s development and has a significant impact on the success of ongoing therapy. It is precisely during the developmental phase that the course is set, and here it is also essential to provide the child with sufficient seating stability to compensate for the corresponding physical deficit. Therapeutically, this allows the focus to be placed on initiating physiological movement patterns and the targeted activation of the trunk-stabilizing muscles.
The major advantage of COBRA is that the seat height can be adjusted even with the seat unit and child in place. So, if after playing close to the floor, the child wants to return to eye level at the table, the desired seat height can be easily set using the release lever, and the springs support the movement in a way that is gentle on the back.
For optimal seating positioning, appropriate seat tilt is essential. COBRA allows for adjustment up to 45°.
Depending on the clinical presentation, the tilt function is an indispensable feature, both for therapeutic approaches and for everyday use.
Children who are unable to position themselves sufficiently independently require the special support of the adjustable seat unit. The seating position not only influences bodily functions and structures but also the user’s activity and participation.
It is important to note here:
- The switch between the three physiological seating positions - active, neutral, and passive - can be achieved through the mechanism, thereby ensuring a broad distribution of body weight pressure. This also helps prevent pressure ulcers
- Additionally, this constant variation alternately engages and relieves all muscle groups. This regulation of muscle tone can, on the one hand, prevent spasms and, on the other, activate weak muscle groups. For example, a neutral or slightly negative seating angle emphasizes the dorsal (back) muscle chains, whereas a positive seating angle or a strongly tilted position tends to engage the ventral (abdominal) muscles.
- A seat angle of >90° can have a positive effect on leg extension spasticity
- A seat angle of <90°, on the other hand, tends to have a positive effect on a general extension pattern of the trunk
- Changing spatial position stimulates the cardiovascular system and metabolism and enhances perception by altering the field of view
- The potential change in pelvic angle and the resulting stimulation of the trunk muscles can stabilize the spine, thereby preventing or at least supporting scoliosis
- The needs-based addition of lateral supports or harnesses promotes a physiologically and anatomically correct sitting position. The trunk stability achieved through this leads to optimal development of the child’s hand-eye coordination and the acquisition of physiological movement patterns of the upper extremities
